Primitive Living Skills | Kids Out and About Hudson Valley

Primitive Living Skills

All our ancestors had one thing in common: a deep and intimate knowledge of their place. They understood the language of the forest, listened to what the seasons dictated, and responded accordingly, learning how to live in balance with everything around them. The Nature Place Day Camp’s Primitive Living Skills is an immersive, hands-on (and hands-in—the fire pit, the dirt, the stream) weekend program, designed to build a foundation in these ancestral skills, perfect for beginners as well as those looking to grow their knowledge and abilities.

Humans have traditionally recognized that their security and survival depends on providing for themselves the four sacred, basic needs: shelter, water, fire, and food. Primitive Living Skills focuses on the techniques and knowledge necessary to procure and provide these with our own hands. Participants will learn primitive shelter building, methods for obtaining and purifying water, various fire building techniques, and ways of securing food, such as foraging, tracking and trapping. Each class is different, building on previous skills and relating to the season and what the earth provides. Space is limited and early enrollment is encouraged

When enrolling for a single session, please register by the Wednesday prior to the session date. Due to the hands-on nature of the Family program, each adult must be accompanied by no more than two children. If you are unable to meet this requirement, please contact us to see how we might accommodate your situation
