O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi at Queens County Farm Museum

Grab you fleece, hats, gloves, coats and woolies and throw on your winter boots! Queens County Farm Museum will host a special outdoor holiday reading of O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi. This special admission program is designed to enrich the holiday season. Renowned actor and raconteur, Queens native Kevin R. Free will lead story time in the farm’s 3-acre pasture. First published in 1905, The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry tells the story of struggling newlyweds so eager to give each other a Christmas gift that each sells the one thing the other holds most dear. O. Henry penned The Gift of the Magi at Pete’s Tavern, New York City’s longest continually operated bar and restaurant. Since 1905, this story has secured its place among the American literary canon and has become synonymous with the Christmas season.

Winter Walk 25th Anniversary -

Winter Walk returns to it’s beloved street festival format to celebrate 25 years as Hudson’s favorite winter celebration. On Saturday, December 4 from 5 pm – 8 pm, Winter Walk lights up the early December night once more with stunning storefront displays, roaming carolers, Mr. & Mrs. Claus, street performers, and a magical fireworks display from the Hudson River. Hudson Hall first produced Winter Walk in 1997 to help bring foot traffic back to Warren Street after a long period of decline. Today, Winter Walk encompasses the entire mile-long stretch of Hudson’s main street, rings Seventh Street Park, spills over to the side streets, and now extends down to Front Street and the waterfront. Learn more about Winter Walk’s origins on our website, courtesy of Ellen Thurston.

SINTERKLAAS FESTIVAL DAY IN RHINEBECK

Every year brings new events and characters to dazzle our community, honor our children and bring light to this darkest time of the year. The Sinterklaas Festivities draw on the Hudson Valley’s Dutch heritage, but with some modern day twists. Children are the focus — becoming kings and queens for the day, turning the switches of the original story into royal scepters. Children make scepters and crowns for themselves at the Crowns and Branches workshops. “But it can’t be about the wanting and having, either.” says creator Jeanne Fleming, “They each have to tie wishes into their branch — one for the community, one for the family, one for the world. They understand their responsibility to be a good king or queen.”
