ASHOKAN CENTER SON JAROCHO CAMP WILL CELEBRATE MUSICAL CULTURE OF VERACRUZ
Friday, May 17 – Sunday, May 19, 2024
Join us for a weekend immersion in the folk music tradition of Veracruz, Mexico: the Ashokan Center’s Ariles Son Jarocho Camp—the first of its kind in the U.S.
The program will highlight the music, dance, and the tapping and clapping that are son jarocho’s signatures. There will be son jarocho master musicians, dancers and teachers from Mexico and the U.S. to interact with son jarocho admirers and practitioners of every proficiency level. Newcomers can become comfortable easily enough to participate right away, and you can also explore deeper levels of the art.
Son jarocho’s influences include African, Romani and Arab, brought by the Spanish, and indigenous Mexican music, a blending of traditions dating to the 17th century. Today, son jarocho is widely practiced in performance and in community get-togethers known as fandangos, where all are invited to join in.
