Bonfire at Boscobel | Kids Out and About Hudson Valley

Bonfire at Boscobel

by Anne Siller

We are frequenters of the Cold Spring Farmer’s Market, which is held on the lovely grounds of Boscobel House and Gardens in Garrison. In recent years, when I have gathered produce or sampled a chocolate torte while carefully keeping eyes on my brood of preschoolers, I have wistfully wished for a stroll. A peaceful stroll--that is, without my kids. Because my kids are …. I’m searching for a euphemism here…..energetic. Can we go with energetic?

Boscobel looks so pristine and proper from the periphery that I was a little afraid of what my kids might do to it. But then I found out about their annual Bonfire Night, held in 2013 on the Sunday before Columbus Day. We decided to take the risk. I am so glad we did! There were marshmallows and long sticks, a giant fire, and lots of room for the ever-energetic to run around. Also included was one of the most beautiful views to be had in the Hudson Valley, a money shot out over the Hudson River.

The evening started with a promise of stargazing led by the museum’s educator, Lisa Dimarzo, but the clouds did not cooperate. Instead, she corralled everyone inside the tent and gave a presentation about static electricity to a rapt audience of about 40 kids. Really, they were mesmerized, because Lisa is electric. When we thanked her for the show, she said she would like to see more kids at Boscobel…even my kids.

Children under 10 were free, 11+ were $12.
