The Hatchet Camp is a residential, overnight camp for campers ages 10-12, who want to experience the adventure and fun of learning the wilderness skills from the book "Hatchet" by Gary Paulson. This book is about how a young boy is stranded in the Canadian wilderness with only a hatchet, his wits and the abliity to learn to survive and thrive deep in the bush.
In this camp, we'll learn about using hand tools like saws, hatchets and carving knives for a variety of wilderness uses, how to care for them and personal safety. We'll learn about how to make a fire in the woods from scratch, tend it safely and use it for cooking, and much more. We will learn how to make tarp shelters, tie practical, useful knots, make our own camping stakes, create warm sleeping areas and good over an open fire.
We will also learn about how to wander safely, exploring the creeks, forest and meadows around Hawk Circle, how to fish for sunnies, make spears, use flint and steel for fire making and leather pouches, too.
All in all, this camp will have your son, daughter or grandchild standing a little taller, filled with stories and adventures, and a light in their eyes as they are excited to share their new skills with your family and friends!
Led by experienced staff in our overnight camp in Cherry Valley, New York.
