About STEM and STEAM
The recent emphasis on STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) aims to give students the skills and knowledge in fields that are not just vital to student success but also deeply intertwined with the real world. STEAM (STEM + Art) is a movement championed by the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). STEAM builds on STEM by acknowledging that imaginative and inventive thinking are the keys to solving some of the world’s most pressing problems, and that collaboration among learners is essential to this problem-solving.
