Outdoor Performance: “The Gardener of Montgomery Place & The Composer of Newburgh, New York”
Saxophone Quartet
During the early 19th century the gardener at Montgomery Place was Alexander Gilson, an African-American slave who, after being freed, stayed on as head gardener; he eventually opened up his own gardening business. The music of Newburgh, New York composer Ulysses J. Alsdorf, whose grandfather was also a freed slave, was chosen to observe the 1909 Henry Hudson-Robert Fulton Celebration. His work will do the same for our event, 110 years later. Admission: Free; guests must bring their own lawn chairs. (In case of inclement weather, concert will be held in the Montgomery Place Coach House; the first 50 guests will be admitted).
