Japanese sumi ink painting is one of the foundations of East Asian art. This technique relies on subtle, controlled brushwork using special black ink to achieve a delicate balance between inked areas and white background. In this workshop, students will learn how to produce complex imagery with just a few careful brushstrokes, and to write their name in Japanese kanji script, a major part of the Japanese writing system. All registered participants will be provided with the necessary art supplies to create and take home their own paintings.

About Ryoko Endo:

Artist/instructor Ryoko Endo was born in Japan and studied graphic design and typography at Musashino Art University in Tokyo. From 2004-2007, Ms. Endo studied Japanese calligraphy with Masako Inkyo and Shingai Tanaka; and took painting classes at the Arts Student League with artist/instructor Kikuo Saito who inspired her to create abstract paintings. Her work has been shown in galleries and competitions nationwide.
