First Day Hike at Minnewaska: Frozen Waters | Kids Out and About Hudson Valley

First Day Hike at Minnewaska: Frozen Waters

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 01/01/2023
Welcome the new year with an invigorating hike to see the Peter's Kill stream as it rushes beneath an icy blanket of frozen water and snow. Join Laura Conner, Environmental Educator, as we hike first to the bridge across the Mossy Glen Footpath, where we will observe the icy cascades of the winter stream. Next, we'll retrace our steps and continue on to see Awosting Falls in all its winter glory. When conditions are cold enough, a volcano-like structure of ice forms beneath the waterfall. A constant stream of green water flows down the sides of this ice cone, carving out new routes along the icy base every few minutes. The total distance for this outing is approximately three miles on a combination of a footpath, which is more narrow, and wide carriage roads. Although the walking is mostly flat, surfaces may be very icy, so participants are encouraged to bring Micro Spikes or other ice traction devices and to dress appropriately for the cold. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Meet at the Lower Parking Lot.
