Step into the glowing world of bioluminescence — where art and science meet in this family friendly workshop (ages 5+ accompanied by a caregiver)
Overview
In this hands-on, family-friendly workshop, participants will learn how and why certain living organisms glow and create their very own living, glowing artwork to take home.
Guided by artist and educator Nikki Romanello, we’ll explore the magic of bioluminescence through simple explanations, visual examples, and a creative painting activity using bioluminescent bacteria. The experience is designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and a sense of wonder — no science background required.
What You’ll Learn
- What bioluminescence is and where it appears in nature (think fireflies, glowing oceans, and deep-sea creatures)
- How scientists and artists use bioluminescence in creative and innovative ways
- Basic lab safety and care practices, presented in an age-appropriate and approachable way
- How to “paint” with bioluminescent bacteria to create glowing designs
