Founded in 2007 to address childhood diet related disease issues within overlooked communities, The Sylvia Center educates young people about the connection between food and health, empowering them to lead healthier lives. The Sylvia Center places food justice and equity at the center of its programming mandate, offering an evidence-based curriculum which includes sustainable food purchasing practices, seasonal and local ingredient preferences, and an ever-expanding database of accessible, nutritious and culturally responsive recipes. Students learn to identify easily obtainable nourishing foods, master basic cooking and kitchen skills and comprehend the fundamentals of the food system. Always focused on community impact, The Sylvia Center strategically partners with community-based organizations, schools, religious organizations, and local businesses, which share its values in order to deliver programming in all five boroughs of New York City and in upstate NY’s Columbia County. The Sylvia Center’s robust catalog of student-centered programs includes “Cooks For Health”, “Teen Culinary Apprenticeship”, “Full Plate in the Classroom” and “Full Plate on The Farm”. The education team is composed of trained chefs, registered dietitians, nutrition educators, sanitization experts and education professionals.
